STAR BOUT ENDS IN FIRST ROUND
The New York Times. April 30, 1913.
Jim Coffey of Ireland stopped Whitey Allen of the Bronx in less than a round.
Allen was no match for the hard hitting Irishman, and after the first few seconds of the opening round he was entirely on the defensive with the finish only a question of a short time. Coffey weighed 193 pounds and Allen tipped the beam at 180 pounds. Allen's principal claim to recognition as a heavyweight was through his victory over Nick Muller at the same club about two weeks ago. He started off well by landing a few left jabs to Coffey's face, but once the latter started Allen never never had a chance. He went down four times in quick sucession, being floored three times and falling once. He took the count of nine on his first fall, and on the second and third trips to the canvas he took the count of three each time. When Coffey sent him down the fourth time the referee waved the Irishman to his corner and stopped the contest.
